To the Reader

When I see, most humane readers, that these my labors are truly dear to you, I shall endeavor to give you, as soon as I am able, these same Istitutioni made in the Latin tongue, together with the Dimostrationi Harmoniche mentioned in various places in this work, and some other matters besides — to which I have not yet, as they say, put the final hand. Meanwhile, read with glad and sincere spirit that which, for many years and for your benefit, I have labored upon. And if you find some things that do not fully satisfy you, remember that I am a man; and I do not suppose, as the good old man of Terence used to say, that anything belonging to man is foreign to me. I mean to say that it could very well be that I have erred in some particular — since we are all subject to that law. And that this is true you may now perceive; for with all the diligence used in the printing, it has not been possible to prevent certain errors from occurring in some leaves of some of the books (though not in all), which you will correct cheerfully before you begin to read; and in doing so you will show how humane you are in pardoning those which, if you find them, are of some importance and cannot be grasped except by the intellect. The first number is that of the page of the work; the second is that of the line.
